Headboard project

Every time Steve and I stay in a hotel we comment on how luxurious it is to have a king size bed, but I didn't want to have to find a new bed to replace our queen that matches our bedroom furniture.  We currently have honey-stained components, someday I hope to have room for the dark-stained suite I inherited from my grandmother, and the quandary of stain color was enough to keep the king bed tabled for years.  That is, until well into this last pregnancy when sleeping was difficult and we decided a new mattress might help.  We had already gotten a box spring alternative that converts from queen to king and minimizes lateral movement (I did a lot of flopping around while pregnant), so all we needed was the mattress.  Every mattress at the store felt so comfortable to me, so Steve picked one out and I found new bedding and then I saw this tutorial reposted on CraftGossip.  An upholstered headboard - brilliant!  And nailhead trim!  Swoon.  Here is the inspiration piece...

And here is the one my Dad and I made...

Rather than use heavy plywood I started with a hollow-core door from Lowes, which happens to be the same size as a king mattress.  I found the fabric in the red tag section of Jo-Ann, and we used a nailhead trim kit to make an even line.  The whole thing cost less than $100 and took maybe an hour to make and hang (with Hercules hooks).  I finally feel like our bedroom is decorated, and the bed got even more comfortable after Bowen was born.

Love upholstered headboards…that is what i am looking at getting once we get a bedroom outfit again…and I've been eyeing that one at West Elm. And you made yours!! What are you doing, working mom with two kids (including a 3 month old) making a headboard!?!?! I wish I could do that, but I don't even dream of attempting it. I can barely seem to make a scrapbook or print pictures to document these years! I dream of someday getting into home projects, etc. again, but Jesus might come back before I get around to it, so…Anyway, looks like you are doing great! Your kids are adorable! Glad you all are settling in nicely :)
